Great boutique hotel situated on a pleasant street within easy walking distance of all that Whitby has to offer. We stayed in the Penny Hedge room, which was very clean and spacious, featuring a large bay window overlooking the street. The room was modern and themed with folklore stories, which added to the charm. Excellent communication from the manager via email the day before arrival about how to access and parking arrangements. Also received a check in text the day of arrival to see how we were getting on, which was nice. Not much hot water on first morning for two showers but returned in the evening, a minor inconvenience but didn’t hinder anything. It would be nice to come back in the summer as we came for a couple of nights in January for my birthday and as expected, Whitby was very quiet. The cafe downstairs was cosy and coffees were good, however we didn’t get to sample the food as there was some work going on in the kitchen I believe. Would highly recommend and would like to return when there is more going on in Whitby.

On a cold wet January evening finding this cafe was like a warm and welcoming beacon. The food was delicious, the veggie options perfect, and the decor was right up my street. I ended up buying art work as well as dinner!

We went to the cafe for brunch, best coffees we've had in Whitby and the food was delicious, lots of choice for vegetarians. Wheelchair accessible. Great vibes in there.

Excellent stay at this boutique hotel. No tired old carpets or dirty old cupboards. Modern, clean, funky, and decorated in a very appealing and fun way.
Very quiet, even though it's on a main road. Was worried finding ear plugs on the beside table, but no need for them. Though someone snoring very loudly from another room couldn't be helped, and no, it wasn't me.
Great internet, which was handy, since reception is terrible for personal wifi on devices in the location.
Cafe downstairs served super tasty food too which was handy!

A last-minute booking for a father-and-son trip to Whitby from Australia, the bunk room ("Rohilla Rescue") fitted the bill although we knew what to expect - this is no ordinary hotel, but it's really well done and the cafe staff downstairs were helpful and friendly despite being very busy. Parking in Whitby can be tricky, the scratch-off permit helps, we had no problem with the 1h spaces outside for drop-off and pick-up just don't forget the parking disk (provided/loaned on arrival). Whitby is a fishing port so it's pretty much uphill to many places, and there are no lifts to the upstairs rooms, so if you have mobility challenges I'd look elsewhere. For the majority of folks it's an easy walk from everywhere, including the abbey if you don't mind a bit of exercise :-)

Nice breakfast buttie but a dog roaming round the place begging for food is not a good look plus it's very unhygienic.

Stayed for two nights in The Pillar room. Robin Hood themed room, interesting mural on the wall but apart from that the room was tiny, with just a sky light window in the ceiling. Felt quite claustrophobic as we were right at the far end of the corridor upstairs. Could hear the guests in the room across the corridor as if they were in our room with us.
Pillows were clumpy and uncomfortable. Had breakfast one morning which was ok but certainly not worth the price. Have previously stayed in cheaper budget rooms in Whitby which were more spacious and comfortable. Overall, quite expensive for what was on offer.

A fantastic place to stay. All the rooms are stylishly decorated with folklore themes. Our room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was a good size and the shower had plenty of power. The adjoining cafe/bistro is also fabulous for breakfast.

Amazing breakfast and the hot chocolate is lovely. Service exceptional and very friendly staff. We had brunch and food was delicious. The folklore map and tales added an extra element.

During my Vampyric escapades around Whitby, I was kindly offered an invitation to cross the threshold and enter this beautifully appointed Cafe. By recommendation from Simon (of Simply Whitby), I had the most flavoursome and perfectly prepared coffee sat by the front window watching the humans stroll past. It brought a wonderful sense of calm to my dark, troubled soul and gave me the energy to carry on with my day-walking activities with improved vigour, 'twixt the cobbled streets and shadows of wonderful Whitby.
I look forward to enjoying the delights within the Jet Black Jewel Cafe once again on my next visit.
Thank you kindly and I shall see you soon,

Great rooms, clean, nicely furnished and comfortable. Can be a little noisy, but that's the nature of the location. Food downstairs is excellent.

Well. Popped over from Scarborough for a quick visit . Parked at West Cliff and went for a walk. It began to rain so we decided on a dog friendly cafe and as we were walking past this establishment we decided to pop in. Only got one foot in the doorway and was instructed by the waitress to wait. As we were waiting we gave way to allow couple and dog to exit as I stood back a local elderly lady walked past shared some pleasantries as if she was acquainted with the waitress and asked for a table for 3 to which she was accommodated immediately. Whilst I was stood in the doorway an extremely unpleasant elderly lady with a long white fringe style bob, black and white rimmed glasses and black and white polkadot dress came from around the counter huffing and tutting as she walked past me with a coffee to serve giving me a look that would turn you to stone. Why ? No reason. I hadn't even got into the place. My self and my wife were appalled and bemused as to this rude behaviour and left immediately and will not return or recommend this place to anyone. Thankfully we found a wonderful little cafe called The Yard tucked away where the staff were uber polite and accommodating.

We stayed for 3 nights in one of the rooms and ate breakfast in the cafe.
The hotel operates without a concierge via key pads, which worked really well. Communication about this was really clear. The rooms have been done really nicely, well maintained, clean and tidy. I was slightly worried when there were ear plugs in the room but quickly realised this is mainly for the seagulls at dawn!
The cafe is also lovely. What a fantastic historic shop space, the stained glass and original terrazzo floor are beautiful. We had the hash and the smashed avo for breakfast, both were great, served with a spicy ‘bloody Mary’ sauce.
Would recommend the rooms and the cafe.

We stayed in Whitby at the beginning of the month and went here twice for breakfast. We really liked the quirkiness and character of the place. Service was good and the food top notch. Definitely one for a return visit. I always appreciate a cafe with original artwork by a local artist which is what you get here.
I give 4 stars for location as parking is something of an issue but I understand this is outside the control of the proprietor.

Lovely room. We stayed in the Robin Hood themed room. It only has a sky light but didn’t make any difference to us. Breakfast (an extra charge) in the café was nice too.

First time in Whitby and Jet Black Jewel did not disappoint. Beautiful room decorated with a local myth and with a view over the town. Lovely breakfasts in the cafe downstairs with cheery, friendly staff. Only downside is the seagulls are very noisy at night, but hotel helpfully provides ear plugs!

We stayed in the polar bear room at the Jet Black Jewel Hotel. The room was fabulous, very comfortable bed and fantastic shower. Each room and the Cafe underneath the accommodation lends itself to the weird and wonderful legends of Whitby making it an unusual and quirky place to stay. The food and coffee in the cafe was lovely and the communication and instructions from the proprietor were flawless. The location is great if you're looking for somewhere close to the pubs, shops and restaurants. The parking permit for a few extra pounds was well worth it. Thankyou, we'll definitely be back!

Nothing to write home about, burger was average & came with a cold undercooked half portion of fries in a bag. Has potential but was disappointed. Staff didn’t ask how the food was and didn’t seem to care upon leaving.

Had a nice cup of tea and breakfast barm. Calm atmosphere and good service. Range of veggi and vegan options which are not always as common in Whitby as one might expect. Do full range of meaty things as well.
Thank you.
